Channel Islands National Park Day Trip from Ventura With Kids
This September, our family is taking a day trip to Channel Islands National Park from Ventura, California. We will travel by boat from Ventura Harbor to Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island, where we plan to visit the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center, take a short family-friendly hike, enjoy a picnic lunch, look for island foxes, skip rocks along the shoreline, and return to Ventura that afternoon.
For our first visit to Channel Islands National Park with kids, we wanted a simple itinerary that would let us experience the island without rushing. Santa Cruz Island – Scorpion Anchorage stood out because the boat landing, visitor center, picnic area, hiking trails, and rocky shoreline are all located within the same general area.
Why We Chose Scorpion Anchorage
Scorpion Anchorage is one of the most popular places to visit on a Channel Islands National Park day trip from Ventura. It is located on the eastern side of Santa Cruz Island and can be reached by boat from Ventura Harbor.
The boat ride is expected to take about an hour, which makes it possible to visit the island and return to the mainland in one day. We are especially excited about the ride itself because it will give us a chance to watch the coastline fade behind us, see Santa Cruz Island come into view, and hopefully spot dolphins, sea lions, seabirds, or even whales along the way.
Unlike many Southern California attractions, Scorpion Anchorage is not centered around rides, restaurants, or shopping. The main experience is the island itself: the wildlife, coastline, hiking trails, historic ranch area, and the feeling of being somewhere that can only be reached by boat.
Taking the Boat from Ventura Harbor
Our day will begin at Ventura Harbor, where we will board the boat to Scorpion Anchorage. Traveling to a national park by boat already makes this trip feel more adventurous than a typical family day trip.
The kids are looking forward to being out on the water and watching for marine life during the crossing. Even though wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, the possibility of seeing dolphins or whales makes the boat ride feel like part of the adventure rather than simply transportation.
As we approach Santa Cruz Island, we expect to see rocky cliffs, open hills, and a coastline that looks very different from the developed beaches of mainland Southern California. Even though the island is close enough to visit for the day, arriving by boat should make it feel much farther away.
Hoping to See an Island Fox
One of the things we are most excited about is the possibility of seeing an island fox.

Island foxes live only on six of California’s eight Channel Islands. The Santa Cruz Island fox is its own subspecies and is found naturally nowhere else in the world. They are also much smaller than mainland gray foxes, with adults roughly the size of a small house cat.
Their small size developed over thousands of years of living in an isolated island environment. The island fox also has an incredible conservation story. The population on Santa Cruz Island once declined dramatically, but focused recovery efforts helped bring the species back.
For the kids, seeing an island fox would be more than spotting a cute animal. It would mean seeing a species that exists only in this one small part of the world. We are hoping to observe one from a respectful distance while exploring the island, and the kids already know that wild animals should never be approached or fed.
Visiting the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center
After arriving at Scorpion Anchorage, we plan to begin at the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center. The visitor center is located in the historic ranch area and includes exhibits about Santa Cruz Island’s wildlife, natural environment, ranching history, and cultural history.
We are especially interested in seeing the island map so the kids can understand how large Santa Cruz Island is and how little of it we will actually explore during one day trip. We also hope to learn more about native plants, island animals, and the history of Scorpion Ranch.
Starting at the visitor center should give the kids context before we head out on the trail. We also plan to check whether Junior Ranger materials are available during our visit.
Taking a Short Family-Friendly Hike
After visiting the ranch area, we plan to take a short hike near Scorpion Anchorage. There are several trails in this part of Santa Cruz Island, including routes through Scorpion Canyon and trails leading toward coastal overlooks.
Because this will be our first Channel Islands trip with kids, we are not focused on completing a long or difficult hike. We want a route that gives us a chance to enjoy the scenery, look for wildlife, and experience the island while still leaving time for lunch and the shoreline.
During the hike, we hope to see rolling island hills, native plants, seabirds, ocean views, and possibly an island fox. Our exact trail will depend on how much time we have and which route feels best for our family once we arrive.
Having a Picnic Lunch at Scorpion Anchorage
After our hike, we plan to return to the picnic area for lunch. Since there are no restaurants or food stands on Santa Cruz Island, we will bring a picnic from the mainland.
We are planning a simple lunch with sandwiches, fruit, snacks, drinks, and a small treat for the kids. Sitting outside after arriving by boat and hiking around the island is one of the parts of the day we are looking forward to most.
The picnic will also give us time to slow down and enjoy the scenery instead of moving immediately to another activity. We may even spot an island fox nearby, although we will keep our food secure and make sure nothing is left behind.
Skipping Rocks Along the Shoreline
After lunch, we plan to spend time along the shoreline near Scorpion Anchorage. Scorpion Beach is not a wide, sandy beach like many Southern California beaches. The shoreline includes sand, cobblestones, and smooth rocks beside the water.
Our kids love searching for rocks and trying to skip them, so we are intentionally leaving time for this part of the day. They can walk along the shore, look for smooth stones, watch the water, and see how many times they can make a rock bounce.
There is no formal activity planned for this portion of the trip. We simply want time to enjoy the island without rushing. These quieter moments often become some of our favorite family travel memories.
Our Planned Channel Islands Day Trip Itinerary
Our exact schedule will depend on the September boat times, but this is the basic itinerary we are planning:
Morning
- Arrive at Ventura Harbor
- Board the boat to Scorpion Anchorage
- Look for marine wildlife during the crossing
- Arrive on Santa Cruz Island
- Visit the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center
Late Morning
- Take a short family-friendly hike
- Enjoy the island scenery and ocean views
- Look for island foxes along the trail
Afternoon
- Eat a picnic lunch
- Spend time along the rocky shoreline
- Skip rocks and explore near the water
- Return to the landing area
- Take the boat back to Ventura
This itinerary gives us a mix of sightseeing, learning, hiking, wildlife watching, and relaxed family time without trying to fit too much into our first visit.
Is Scorpion Anchorage Good for Families?
Scorpion Anchorage appears to be a good choice for families visiting Channel Islands National Park for the first time. The boat ride from Ventura is manageable for a day trip, and several of the main activities are located near the landing area.
Families can visit the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center, take a short hike, enjoy a picnic, explore the shoreline, look for island foxes, and return to Ventura in the same day. Visitors can also book activities such as kayaking, but a separate excursion is not necessary to enjoy the island.
For our family, the appeal is the opportunity to experience a national park that feels remote and adventurous without needing to camp overnight.
Looking Forward to Our September Trip
Our upcoming Channel Islands National Park day trip will be our first visit to Scorpion Anchorage and Santa Cruz Island. We are excited about the boat ride from Ventura, the chance to see marine wildlife, exploring the visitor center, hiking together, eating lunch outside, and skipping rocks beside the Pacific Ocean.
Most of all, we are hoping to see an island fox in its natural habitat. Knowing that the Santa Cruz Island fox is found nowhere else in the world makes the possibility of seeing one feel especially meaningful.
After our September trip, we will update this post with the trail we chose, the wildlife we saw, what our kids enjoyed most, and our honest tips for visiting Scorpion Anchorage as a family.
